A compression test shows that one cylinder is too low. A leak test on that cylinder shows excessive leakage. During the test, air could be heard coming from the tail pipe. Which of the following could be the cause?

A. Broken piston rings C. Leaking intake valve B. Leaking head gasket D. Exhaust valve not seating

Answer: The correct answer is D, exhaust valve not seating. If an exhaust valve is not seated, a leak test will force air past the valve and out the tail pipe. A leaking intake valve will allow air into the intake manifold and out the throttle body. Head gasket or ring leaks will allow air into the cooling system or crankcase.
